Netflix swiftly renews A Different World reboot for season 2

Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert’s free-spirited daughter Deborah (Maleah Joi Moon) will return to Hillman College for her sophomore year in the just-announced second season of Netflix’s reboot of A Different World. The renewal comes just over a week after the sitcom debuted on the streamer on September 24. It’s an increasingly rare move for Netflix to greenlight a second season, given its tendency to pull the plug on series after just one season, oftentimes leaving viewers with cliffhangers that’ll never get resolved. There was plenty riding on Netflix’s A Different World reboot, because of the popularity and cultural significance of its namesake, which itself was a spin-off of the hugely successful sitcom The Cosby Show.

But A Different World cleared the freshman-season hurdle. According to Netflix, the show debuted at No. 4 on the Global Top 10 English TV list, earning 4.2 million views and reaching the Top 10 in 15 countries. “It’s so validating to be bolstered by our amazing audience,” creator, showrunner, and executive producer Felicia Pride said in the press release. “We are beyond excited to return to Hillman and continue to tell meaningful and heartfelt stories that resonate across generations. I am thrilled for our brilliant cast and our hard-working crew.”

Here’s what to expect from season two, per the official logline: “After transformative summers, Deborah and her Hillman classmates return to campus for sophomore year with a ‘New Year, New Me’ attitude, only to find themselves faced with past decisions, uncertain futures, new loves and friendships, and deeper questions of purpose… all while, of course, getting themselves into a whole lot of new mess.”
