It’s rare, but sometimes the Oscars just can’t seem to make a decision. Before tonight, there have only been five ties in Oscar history (and one near-tie in 1932). But at the 98th Academy Awards, when it came to Live Action Shorts, the voting body just couldn’t make up its mind. So it did what any awards show worth its weight in salt would do and awarded both The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva the Oscar for Best Live Action Short.
As presenter, Kumail Nanjiani noted, ironically, the award for Best Live Action Short was going to take twice as long. It took so long that the production cut off Exchanging Saliva co-director Alexandre Singh’s speech by slowly lowering the microphone and cutting to Conan O’Brien laughing to himself. The host later declared the gaffe “hilarious.” Thankfully, everyone was a good sport about it, with Singh delighting the audience with another smack to Timothée Chalamet’s wrist.
Perhaps even more unprecedented, this isn’t the first time this has happened in this category. In 1994, Franz Kafka’s It’s A Wonderful Life and Trevor tied for Best Live Action Short, too. However, the last time the Academy gave out a tie it was for two Live Action Longs: Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty, which shared the award for Sound Editing. Let’s just hope there isn’t a tie for Best Picture. No one’s going to be happy with a Frankenstein–F1 tie.
