Alamo Drafthouse reaches deal with NY union, gives hard pass to M3GAN's second-screen experience

With good news in short supply these days, we have to turn to the Alamo Drafthouse, of all places, for a pick-me-up—two, in fact. After a 58-day strike, the United Auto Workers Local 2179 ratified a tentative agreement between the union representing the Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn locations and the Sony-owned theaters chain. The UAW claimed that the Drafthouse had violated labor law by cutting staff during bargaining, prompting a two-month boycott of the New York locations. Per The Hollywood Reporter, those laid-off employees will officially return to work on Friday, with previously earned PTO and sick time reinstated. As it did in Denver, the agreement effectively ended the New York boycott.

On top of finally giving its employees their due, Alamo Drafthouse is also standing up for its customers by switching Meta’s next product failure to Do Not Disturb. Last week, Blumhouse announced that M3GAN, Annabelle, and Ma were all heading back to theaters for a one-night engagement. Tacked on to the re-release is another Silicon Valley tax, a second-screen feature by Meta called Movie Mate. It’s the same junk TV networks have been trying to make happen for a decade, perfect for a company like Meta, which hasn’t made anything of value in a decade. The Movie Mate will reportedly “augment” and “uplevel” the second-screen experience by pushing “sneak peeks, exclusive recorded messages from directors and talent from the films and surprise special appearances in select markets” (and presumably advertisements) to phones during the film, encouraging viewers to become users who play with their phone during the movie. Fortunately, the sad theatergoers who can’t sit through M3GAN without firing up Meta’s chatbot had better go somewhere else. Alamo tells Variety that their strict no-phones policy will be enforced during the screenings. For once, it’s nice to see Zuck get Zucc’d.
