Amazon has found the leads for its Fourth Wing TV show

If you haven’t been near a bookstore (or Goodreads) (or BookTok) (or, basically, large chunks of the modern internet) recently, you might not be aware of just how massive a franchise Rebecca Yarros’ Fourth Wing has become. Suffice it to say that the numbers for the dragon-riding “new adult” fantasy series are big, with Yarros having sold more than 12 million books since the first title debuted just a few years ago in 2023. Given how many of those weighty tomes it’s personally dispatched its various bladder-troubled delivery drivers to ship out, Amazon took notice of that success basically immediately, snapping up the rights to the whole franchise; back in May, it officially gave the series a green light, and this week, per Deadline, Prime Video has finally found its leads for Meredith Averill’s adaptation of the series.

Specifically, the show has cast Babygirl and We Were Liars co-star Esther McGregor as the franchise’s lead character, dragon-riding cadet (and fantasy nepo baby) Violet Sorrengail. (McGregor can presumably relate to at least the second part of that description, being the daughter of actor Ewan McGregor.) Emilio Sakraya, meanwhile—who’s made a name for himself in both German film and on the German music charts—has been cast as Xaden Riorson, Violet’s rival, who she feels intense animosity toward. (Do these two youths, pitted against each other by differing personalities and a bloody family history, wind up hooking up? Far be it from us to ruin the surprise/inevitable A03 binge.)

Prime, meanwhile, has also got a ton of behind-the-scenes talent lined up behind this thing, which is probably as close as it’s going to get (dragons-wise, at least), to Jeff Bezos’ famous demand to get him his own Game Of Thrones. Westworld and Fallout‘s Lisa Joy is on hand to executive produce and direct, Michael B. Jordan is an executive producer through his Outlier Society production banner, and showrunner Averill has a strong track record in streaming genre TV, having worked as a co-showrunner on series like The Haunting Of Hill House and Locke And Key. That being said, all of these factors are being hurled against the stone wall of the expectations of an extremely fervent fanbase; it’ll be fascinating to see if the resulting show can live up to those dragon-riding dreams.
