Andrew Lloyd Webber bought a dog over the Cats movie

The composer called the movie "appalling" and said there's a "very, very long list" of things wrong with Tom Hooper's adaptation.

Andrew Lloyd Webber bought a dog over the Cats movie

Love it or hate it, Cats the musical was hugely popular on stage, at one point holding the title as the longest running Broadway musical. The musical from Andrew Lloyd Webber is basically plotless; it’s just a bunch of singers and dancers dressed as cats, explaining their character’s whole deal. One of them will go to heaven at the end. This material, infamously, did not translate particularly well in Tom Hooper’s screen adaptation, which swapped spandex leotards for digital fur technology and counted Rebel Wilson, James Corden, Jason Derulo, and Taylor Swift among its cast. At one point, there was reportedly a cut of the film where the characters have digital feline buttholes.

“Because of the appalling Cats movie, I went out and bought myself a little Havanese puppy,” says Webber during an interview on CBS Sunday Mornings. “To recover from the trauma of the Cats movie?” asks journalist Mo Rocca. “Well, yes,” responds Webber. “It’s my therapy dog on planes. I just write a note to the airline saying, you know, ‘Reason for dog on plane:’ and just put ‘Cats movie.’ And they always just come back saying, ‘No doctor’s certificate required.'” At least someone is still having a good time traveling by air. When asked what exactly he didn’t like about Cats, Webber responds, “Well, is this a very, very long interview we’re doing? Because it could be a very, very long list.”

Of course, this is hardly a hot take. The pseudo-eldritch horror that is the Cats movie has been widely derided since its release in 2019. But Webber has had some beef with cats for a while; in 2007, it was reported that his kitten Otto climbed into his piano and destroyed the in-progress score for his Phantom Of The Opera sequel Love Never Dies that was stored on the computer inside the piano. Sounds like quite enough cats for one lifetime.
