Two years after we named Angel Olsen’s Burn Your Fire For No Witness our number one album of the year, she’s back with a brand new sound for her upcoming record, My Woman. In place of the softer, folksy vibe of her earlier work, there’s a little more of an electronic edge to the two singles she’s released so far. In other words: She’s still got a retro sound, but she seems to have moved from the late ’50s/early ’60s to the late ’60s/early ’70s. And appropriately enough for that latter era, she sets much of the music video for “Shut Up Kiss Me” in a roller rink. Wearing the same silver tinsel wig from the “Intern” video she released earlier this month, Olsen throws on some skates, sits at a bar, and makes a phone call from her car—all while singing directly at the camera.
Olsen wrote and directed the fun, flirty video herself. There’s a delightfully low-fi feel to the whole thing and she even puts a funny nod to her performance anxieties at the end.
My Woman will be available on September 2 and Olsen’s tour dates are available right here.
