Smoke is fire, as the kids say. The new Apple TV+ crime drama was inspired by truth.media’s Firebug podcast and follows “a troubled detective (Jurnee Smollett) and an enigmatic arson investigator (Taron Egerton) as they pursue the trails of two serial arsonists,” per its official logline. The buddy-cop dynamic isn’t new, but the arson twist allows a lot of room for cool shots of Egererton and Smollett walking away from burning buildings without turning around—one would assume, at least. We’ll see when the first two installments of the nine-episode series premiere June 27, with new episodes following every Friday.

Smoke was written and created by Dennis Lehane and executive produced by Egerton, reuniting the team that also created Apple TV+’s 2022 true crime miniseries, Black Bird, which went on to earn three Emmy nominations (including one for Egerton) and one win. Egerton also recently starred in Tetris and TSA thriller Carry-On, while Smollett appeared in The Order, The Burial, and We Grown Now.

In addition to Egerton and Smollett, Smoke also boasts a cast of hot commodities including Anna Chlumsky, Greg Kinnear, John Leguizamo, Rafe Spall, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Hannah Emily Anderson, and Adina Porter.
