Austin Butler and Jeremy Allen White are Enemies

What happens when you pit two of Hollywood’s hottest stars against each other? They could either happily share the screen or, in some cases, become sworn enemies. Luckily, Austin Butler and Jeremy Allen White fall into that first camp, although they’ll be playing the second. The two stars will topline Henry Dunham’s Enemies, a new crime thriller from A24, Deadline reports.

Dunham, who previously helmed 2018 crime drama The Standoff At Sparrow Creek, will both write and direct. Enemies is a story we’ve seen time and time again, though never with Butler and White! The script is said to follow “a relentless detective and an infamous contract killer [who] collide in a deadly game of cat and mouse.” Still, there must have been something new enough in there to inspire A24 to spend $25 million on the production. Filming reportedly begins this summer in Chicago.

A24 is bringing its usual suspects along for the project. Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen are producing for Square Peg, along with Alejandro De Leon and Josh Bachove. Butler is also deep in the A24 pocket at this point. He appears in Aster’s latest, Eddington, which has its Cannes premiere later this week. He’s also set to star in the studio’s Deep Cuts, a romance opposite Saoirse Ronan.

White is also part of the A24 rolodex after starring in The Iron Claw in 2023. He’s already had a big week: just yesterday, Hulu announced that season four of The Bear will enter the kitchen June 25. Hopefully Carmy won’t end up with any new enemies by the end of this run, but if he does, at least White can use that as research for the new film.
