A doorman in a New York City apartment building knows everyone, and knows a hell of a lot about them. It is literally his job. In Bad Shabbos, Cliff “Method Man” Smith’s doorman character offers even more service, wooing and winning over out of town parents for the residents of his Upper West Side building over the course of a tense Shabbat dinner. You can check him out in an exclusive clip below.
Bad Shabbos follows David (Jon Bass) and Meg (Meghan Leathers) bringing David’s Jewish and Meg’s Catholic parents together for Shabbat. “When an unexpected death occurs at David’s family home, the motley crew must band together to save dinner – and themselves – from ruin,” reads an official plot synopsis. Kyra Sedgwick, Milana Vayntrub, and David Paymer are also among the supporting cast, but the film might sound familiar to A.V. Club readers for another reason: Bad Shabbos is directed by Daniel Robbins, who co-wrote the script with Zach Weiner. The two also made Citizen Weiner, a pseudo-documentary following a New York City council race that ended with an invented sex scandal.
Bad Shabbos won the Audience Award at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival. The film is currently playing in New York, and will open in Los Angeles and select cities on June 6.
