Jermaine Fowler stars in the revival series, which goes heavy on vibes and non-existent on cameos from old Barbershop stars.

Punkie Johnson and Roy Wood Jr. prop up the teaser for Prime Video's new Barbershop show

The big question hanging over Prime Video’s Barbershop show becomes pretty obvious over the two-minute run of its just-released initial teaser. I.e., how much can the new series feel like the original Barbershop, with so little of its original cast and creative team involved? Sure, Marshall Todd, who co-wrote the 2002 original, is back as co-showrunner, working with Only Murders In The Building and Dave‘s Max Searle. But continuity in front of the camera basically starts and stops at the “Calvin’s Barbershop” sign that shows up in the teaser’s opening seconds. Everybody else is a total newbie—which raises the question of just how busy Cedric The Entertainer has to be these days to not at least pop his head in for a cameo, huh?

Instead, we get OMitB alum Jermaine Fowler starring as Trav, a young man who “returns to Chicago hoping to honor his grandfather’s legacy at the iconic Calvin’s barbershop.” (Would you believe that both the city, and the shop, have changed?) It’s not like the show’s not packed with modern talent or anything, with Brett Gray, Punkie Johnson, Roy Wood Jr., E.J. Bonilla, Bresha Webb, Bokeem Woodbine, Tiana Okoye, and Langston Kerman all showing up in its starring cast. (Wood, unsurprisingly, gets the best moments in the trailer, playing a veteran barber at the revived shop). But the new Barbershop is obviously trying to match vibes rather than tug directly on people’s memories—a tricky prospect for a revival project that’s clearly banking on at least some measure of nostalgia to get audiences in the door.

Barbershop debuts on February 10, 2027 on Prime Video.
