Prime Video announced today that we’re in for more pillaging, as creator Michael Hirst is delving back into ancient Norse lore for his new series, the aptly named Bloodaxe. This will be Hirst’s third foray into the Scandinavian sagas, as his original period drama Vikings was followed by the Hirst-produced sequel Vikings: Valhalla (from current East Of Eden showrunner Jeb Stuart.)
As to what connections, if any, this new series will have with the originals’ focus on the life and deeds of legendary (if historically sketchy) Viking warrior Ragnar Lothbrok (played memorably in the first series by Travis Fimmel), details are as scarce as the pieced-together actual histories of the main characters. We do know that Bloodaxe, appropriately enough, will center on another infamous Norse warrior, Eric Bloodaxe, played by Australian actor Xavier Molyneux, and his equally badass wife, Gunnhild, Mother of Kings (Bridgerton‘s Jennifer Madsen). This Eric is billed as son of sometime Vikings antagonist Harald Finehair, played here by Jesper Christensen.
