Season five of the Shonda Rhimes show is officially in production.

It'll be Francesca and Michaela's season when Bridgerton returns

So far, Francesca Stirling’s time on Bridgerton hasn’t quite been as steamy as everyone else’s. Her husband John (Victor Alli) died toward the end of season four, and Francesca (Hannah Dodd) spent a lot of the marriage dealing with unresolved feelings for his cousin, Michaela (Masali Baduza). When Bridgerton returns for season five, it’ll be those two women who take center stage, becoming the series’ first same-sex anchor couple.

An official logline for the season reads:

The fifth season of Bridgerton spotlights introverted middle daughter Francesca (Hannah Dodd). Two years after losing her beloved husband John, Fran decides to reenter the marriage mart for practical reasons. But when John’s cousin Michaela (Masali Baduza) returns to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate, Fran’s complicated feelings will have her questioning whether to stick to her pragmatic intentions or pursue her inner passions.

The first season of Bridgerton focused largely on Daphne’s romance, with subsequent seasons looking at Anthony, Colin, and Benedict. The fifth season will actually be based on the sixth book in the original series, When He Was Wicked, which follows Francesca and John’s male cousin Michael; the character is gender-swapped for the TV season. The fifth season of Bridgerton is officially in production; Netflix didn’t offer any timeline for when the eight episodes—or, more likely, a chunk of the season—will premiere, but you can check out a production clip below.
