Curry Barker has a pitch for an R-rated Indiana Jones movie

With a box office hit under his belt, the sky’s the limit for Curry Barker—and he’s certainly dreaming big. In a recent interview with Gold Derby, the Obsession writer-director said that he and producing partner Cooper Tomlinson aspire to make a balls-to-the-wall, outrageous R-rated version of Indiana Jones. “I want to do a crazy adventure movie,” Barker said. “That’s something that Cooper and I have talked about, because we feel like we’ve never seen something like that; we’ve only ever seen the family-friendly version. But what happens if two regular guys, or one regular guy, goes on a journey that turns crazy? Literally pushing the boundaries of that genre would be fun for me.”

Barker’s vague pitch isn’t entirely out of left field for George Lucas’ beloved action-adventure franchise starring Harrison Ford as Indy. While the Indiana Jones movies are largely family-friendly adventures, that hasn’t stopped them from venturing into eerie, spooky, or downright gory territory. See: The infamous Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom scene in which the antagonist Mola Ram reaches into a human sacrifice’s chest with his bare hand and pulls out his heart. The moment was so graphic that it sparked waves of outcry from parents and prompted Temple Of Doom director Steven Spielberg to suggest an intermediate rating between PG and R, leading to the creation of the PG-13 rating. The last installment in the franchise, Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny, was released in 2023 and grossed $383 million worldwide, an underwhelming haul for a film that was one of the most expensive movies ever made, with a reported budget of $419 million. Dial Of Destiny was billed as the final film in the franchise, but given Hollywood’s tendency to recycle popular IP, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Indiana Jones get the reboot treatment eventually—and maybe by then, Barker will have a fully fleshed-out concept to take the adventurer in a more R-rated direction.
