Despite having full knowledge of the endless bureaucratic machinations involved when you take an issue before the Galactic Senate, the British Government has decided some things are worth the legal headache—specifically, Harrison Ford’s leg. You may recall when Ford’s ankle was broken during filming of the $2 billion-and-counting box office behemoth Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it looked like the Millennium Falcon had taken revenge for all those times Han Solo had pushed it to lightspeed before it was ready. We all wondered when someone would stand up for the rights of famous actor’s legs. (“First they came for Harrison Ford’s leg, and I did nothing,” and so on.) Well, fret no more: Variety reports the British government has filed criminal charges against the producers of the film, claiming the on-set accident violated safety regulations.
Specifically, the government’s charging Disney subsidiary Foodles Production Ltd. (the “limited” in the name presumably representing the amount of thought the company gave to naming itself “Foodles”) with four violations of workplace health and safety laws. Given that Ford was “hit by a hydraulic door while filming a scene with the Millennium Falcon at Pinewood Studios near London,” someone apparently decided that hydraulic door was being willfully negligent of safety regulations. In response, a company spokesman issued the following statement: “Cast and crew safety is always a top priority. We provided full cooperation during HSE’s investigation into the on-set accident that occurred in June 2014 and are disappointed in HSE’s decision.” Harrison Ford, meanwhile, almost certainly issued a statement consisting of a grimace, an eyeroll, and a middle finger.
