Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, and Kyle Chandler to form unconventional love triangle in new Todd Haynes movie

After contributing his directorial talents to television with an adaptation of Mildred Pierce and an episode of Enlightened, Todd Haynes is set to return to the big screen with a film about two women in 1950s New York. According to Deadline, Kyle Chandler is the latest actor to join the cast of Carol, which also includes Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, and Sarah Paulson.

Blanchett and Chandler will play an unhappy husband and wife, while Mara is set to star as a young department store clerk who falls for Blanchett. Based on a 1952 novella by Patricia Highsmith (who also penned The Talented Mister Ripley novel), the film follows the blossoming relationship between the two women and its effect on Chandler and Blanchett's marriage. In other words, it’s a classic case of “clear eyes, full hearts, can lose your wife to another woman.”

Carol not only reunites Haynes and Blanchett—she famously portrayed Bob Dylan in Haynes’ I’m Not There—it’s also a return to the '50s for Haynes, who previously tackled the period with the help of Julianne Moore in Far From Heaven, albeit in a suburban setting. Filming on Carol is scheduled to start mid-March.
