Caught
A street tough (Arie Verveen) on the verge of being arrested is taken in by a fish merchant (Edward James Olmos) and his wife (Maria Conchita Alonso) in this dark, largely unseen drama. Once he's installed as an indispensible assistant, Verveen begins slipping in and out of an Irish accent while Alonso slips in and out of his bed. Despite the deception, everyone seems happier than they've ever been until the return of Olmos' and Alonso's failed stand-up comedian son (Steven Schub). While it may be packaged and plotted like a typical erotic thriller, Caught is much more worthwhile than most videos featuring a passionate, half-naked embrace on the cover. Verveen's slippery accent aside, the principal players give convincing performances, with Schub bringing a third dimension to what could have been a flatly obnoxious character. Caught does get somewhat tedious during its second half, and arrives at a conclusion that doesn't add up to much, but what comes before it is an interesting examination of the unseen, everyday passions of unseen, everyday people.
