South Park, not to be outdone by Trump, rebrands to South America

Arbitrarily slapping a new name on established institutions and landmarks out of spite is de rigueur for the current President Donald Trump, so it’s only right that the program that has mined such rich comic ore from him for years would follow suit. In a Tuesday announcement, the Comedy Central series South Park said it would rebrand as South America ahead of its twenty-ninth season premiere. “Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA. We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount—a Skydance Capitulation.”

The first part of the announcement is meant as a poke at the mega-tech corporations, which have altered Lake Ontario’s name to “Lake America” on their respective map services following the president’s signing of an executive order ordering the change on August 27. The second is South America creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s latest attempt to rile their corporate overlords, Paramount Skydance, to which Paramount Skydance probably stopped counting all their South Park cash long enough to nod agitatedly in their direction.

The South America rebranding comes after the show celebrated this weekend’s Emmy win for Outstanding Animated Program on the official South Park—sorry, America—account on X, which itself was arbitrarily rebranded by the platform’s owner, Elon Musk, in 2023. (Truly, a testament to how minds think alike!) The post depicts the show’s cast fronted by the cartoon version of Trump, who can be seen hoisting the very award that the President himself has yet to win, despite being nominated twice for The Apprentice over twenty years ago.

South Park‘s twenty-ninth season premieres on September 16 on Comedy Central, with new episodes available on Paramount+ the following day in the U.S., Canada, and Australia.
