Chad Powers might join "basketball team or something" in season three

Should Glen Powell's makeup-heavy sports comedy get renewed, he might be shooting hoops.

Chad Powers might join

The journey of Chad Powers is one of constant swerves and surprises. Just when you think you’re going to watch a show starring Glen Powell’s perfectly symmetrical face, BAM, he puts a big, funny honker on it. Described as a “deep and deeply stupid show” by co-creator Michael Waldron in a new interview with Variety, Chad Powers hit Hulu for season two in early September. For as “deeply stupid” the show is, it’s been a hit with viewers, becoming Hulu’s third-biggest returning show of the year, behind The Bear and Paradise. A third season order from the streamer still awaits the Powell-led football comedy, so much so that Waldron is already thinking about what other sports the master of disguise could join.

Though season two ends on a big cliffhanger, Waldron tells Variety, “If they want us to make more, I guess Chad can join the basketball team or something.” Still, “nothing’s guaranteed,” and if Hulu wants Powell to get all gussied up again, the co-creator plans to keep “subvert[ing] the audience’s expectations of telling a sports story — which has these predictable conventions: the rise and fall and rise again.” Waldron is aware of how dangerous it is to continue producing a show with such a stupid (his words) premise. “A story like this certainly doesn’t want to overstay its welcome,” he says. So we’ll just have to wait and see if Chad has the power to don the prosthetics and take the field again or if it’s time to hit the eternal showers.
