Few of us will ever live the kind of lives that end up being adapted into a film starring a very handsome actor. Chris Hansen, host of the infamous reality TV series To Catch a Predator, will soon experience just that with Primetime, the upcoming thriller starring Robert Pattinson based on the Esquire article, “Tonight On Dateline, This Man Will Die.” And he’s seemingly furious. After refusing to sign an NDA with A24 to screen the film in advance, which might have shown him how Pattinson and director Lance Oppenheim (Spermworld) portrayed him and his reputation, Hansen is opting to keep giving the film free publicity, even while chipping in a few bucks of his own.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hansen has purchased theater ads for his streaming network, TruBlu, which airs his latest efforts to corner suspected child molesters by first casually suggesting they park it somewhere. These spots, which feature Hansen addressing the theater audience and telling them to take a seat, will play before every screening of Primetimer—a form of synergy to which A24 is probably not entirely opposed.
These grievances come after David Osit’s media-crit documentary Predators, in which Hansen appeared in an interview that posed tough questions about media ethics the former Dateline NBC anchor didn’t seem fully prepared to answer. And indeed, the irony of hawking his crusader persona to promote his network while he pursues legal options against a film that may criticize Hansen for pursuing fame using that very persona is perhaps eluding Hansen at the moment.
Primetime, the film which punny folks on social media have called “Dark Knightcrawler,” will hit theaters on September 25 after its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on September 5.
