“Having successfully traversed India and Italy, storylines from both Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana will be woven into the upcoming second season of the mothership series Citadel. While these successful and widely enjoyed international chapters will not continue as individual series, Season 2 of Citadel will be our most exhilarating yet,” Amazon MGM Studios’ head of TV Vernon Sanders said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). “With high-stakes storytelling, new additions to our amazing cast and bold, cinematic ambition, the new season will deepen the emotional journeys of Nadia, Mason, and Orlick against the relentless force that is Manticore. We’re excited to share what’s next when Citadel Season 2 premieres globally in Q2 of 2026.”
As a franchise, Citadel is clearly under siege. Last month THR reported that Amazon MGM was “unhappy with what they have seen so far of season two, according to sources.” And the first season, which was the second-most expensive television series of all time, had an incredibly troubled production with duelling creative visions and ballooning budgets—only to turn out a dud that didn’t make much impact with U.S. audiences. The show no longer has a champion at Amazon after the ouster of Jennifer Salke; and in fact, she was probably ousted in part because she did champion the show, which is, again, an expensive dud. And now that the studio has wrangled complete control over James Bond, what need has it for Citadel?
All to say, the future for Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra-Jonas’ thriller is not looking good, let alone other planned international spin-offs in Spain, Mexico, and beyond. Nevertheless, Prime Video released a season two synopsis: “One month after the events of the first season, we find our Citadel spies underground, as they’re being hunted by Manticore agents around the world. They’re pulled out of hiding to join forces with a new team of unconventional spies when Manticore’s Brazilian billionaire Paulo Braga threatens to unleash a cataclysmic piece of technology, built by Citadel’s own Bernard Orlick, into the world.” Hope it’s worth the three-year wait!
