Things not looking so good for Citadel

The extremely expensive spy show collaboration between the Russos and Amazon has just been hit with delays, and a pause on all its spin-offs.

Citadel is, in some ways, the ultimate Amazon TV show—and that includes the very real chance that anyone you know who isn’t extremely plugged into the world of streaming TV might not have the first clue what it is. The show, reportedly the second-most expensive TV series of all time, epitomizes much of the Amazon streaming playbook over the last few years, what with throwing huge amounts of money at big-name talent (both in front of, and behind the camera, including the noted contributions of Avengers guys Joe and Anthony Russo) in order to produce something that critics and audiences alike greeted with a noncommittal shrug. Amazon nevertheless raced to commission a second season, while also continuing plans to roll out more international spin-offs as part of a wide-reaching global domination scheme. Now, though, those plans have apparently hit a hitch.

Specifically, THR reports that Citadel‘s second season has just been hit with a multi-month delay, getting bumped back from a fall 2025 release date to an alleged one some time in the spring of 2026. At the same time, plans for more of those international spin-offs—which previously included Italian production Citadel: Diana and India-based Citadel: Honey Bunny—have been put on hold. All of this, apparently, brought on by Amazon execs watching footage of the show’s second season (all of which was reportedly directed by Joe Russo), and apparently getting a little worried about where all their cash was going.

The subtext to all this, of course, is the departure of Jen Salke as the head of Amazon MGM earlier this week. Salke was the one who originally brought Citadel to the Russos in the first place back in 2018—implicitly because Amazon was looking to get into the “faux Bond show” game back before the company shelled out huge amounts of money to just… buy James Bond. Salke was reportedly a big believer in the series; now that she’s out, it’s not entirely shocking that her big, expensive, extraneous baby has come under additional scrutiny.
