Coco to ask "Remember Me?" with sequel

Bob Iger revealed at a shareholder’s meeting today that Pixar is gearing up for a 2029 sequel.

Coco to ask

What is dead may never die, both in Westeros and in the magical kingdom of Disney. CEO Bob Iger announced today that Coco, the well-regarded 2017 Pixar film, is next up to get a sequel. “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure,” Iger said today at a shareholder’s meeting, according to a press release. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.” The sequel is currently eyeing a 2029 theatrical release.

Though the initial news didn’t share any casting information, it did confirm that the creative team behind the original—director Lee Unkrich, co-director Adrian Molina, and producer Mark Nielsen—would reunite for the sequel. Coco stars Anthony Gonzalez as the voice of the 12-year-old Miguel, who sets out to become a musician with the help of his dead relatives. Gael García Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Alanna Ubach, and Edward James Olmos also contributed their voices to the 2017 film.

Though it may take 12 years between films, Disney and Pixar have been going heavy on sequels and remakes in recent years, to mixed success. Inside Out 2 was the highest-grossing film of 2024, even if it may not be held in quite as high esteem as its predecessor. (It was also, by most accounts, a very unpleasant working environment for its animators.) The studio has already announced Toy Story 5, with Tim Allen having started work on the film last December ahead of its 2026 release, and Incredibles 3, which still hasn’t announced much of a concrete timeline. A report last spring in Bloomberg also suggested there could be another Finding Nemo on the horizon, with Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter correctly noting “The ocean’s a big place.” Luckily for the world of Coco, so is the land of the dead.
