Who he is: Colossus, a.k.a. Peter/Piotr Rasputin
His power: Colossus can turn his entire body to steel, which gives him superstrength and allows him to sustain considerable physical damage.
His story: Colossus is the X-Man who has to leave the main line of movies in order to get the spotlight. He first powers up in X2 during William Stryker’s attack on Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters, helping the younger students by fighting soldiers and leading them through a secret passage to sanctuary. Peter gets a bigger role in X-Men: The Last Stand when he becomes a full-fledged member of the X-Men, but his role is almost entirely limited to fighting; he delivers the X-franchise’s first and only “Fastball Special” when he tosses Wolverine at a Sentinel in the Danger Room and helps fight Magneto’s Brotherhood during the final battle on Alcatraz Island. Colossus doesn’t get much development, and that continues with his small role in X-Men: Days Of Future Past, which ends with a rewritten timeline that gives Colossus more to do.
The new Colossus that appears in Deadpool has the Russian accent of his comic book counterpart, and the film has a lot of fun with his character as he and his student, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, interact with the titular antihero. Colossus wants Deadpool to use his powers for good, and he tries to bring Deadpool in after he kills a bunch of people and causes a massive traffic incident. Colossus later has a brutal brawl with the superpowered Angel Dust, and when Deadpool has his gun to the head of his archnemesis, Ajax, Colossus begins a monologue that will hopefully persuade Wade not to pull the trigger. The speech fails, a bullet is fired through Ajax’s brain, and Colossus heads back to the school with Negasonic, convinced that there’s no place for Deadpool on the X-Men.
