Conan O’Brien is now the first U.S. talk-show host to film in Cuba since 1962

It’s no Chicago, but Conan O’Brien made history over the weekend by becoming the first American talk show host to film in Cuba since President Obama began normalizing relations with the Communist nation in December. (Jack Paar famously interviewed Fidel Castro in 1959, but no late-night crews have been allowed in the country since the U.S. embargo began in 1962.)

O’Brien and his crew flew to Havana on Thursday and spent the next few days filming Conan’s famous remote segments, presumably while slathered in SPF 10,000 sunscreen to protect O’Brien’s pale Irish skin from the Caribbean sun. The Associated Press reports that the segments will give Conan’s audience “a rare glimpse into the daily life of a country not often seen by American viewers.” Whether Triumph The Insult Comic Dog stowed away in O’Brien’s suitcase (he does love cigars) is unknown at this time, but will be revealed when the segments air on Conan on March 4.
