As for Marvel’s typical hyper-secrecy—a mandate that kept Sadie Sink’s true role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day under wraps during production and all the way through that film’s release (are we allowed to say who she’s playing yet?)—THR raised an interesting point in its Storrie story: We don’t yet know which Ghost Rider Gosling is playing. Of course, the smart money is on Johnny Blaze, co-created by Gary Friedrich, Mike Ploog, and Roy Thomas in 1972 (based on Evel Kineval!), who was portrayed by Nicolas Cage in 2007’s Ghost Rider and its pretty wild 2011 sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance, in which Cage pissed fire just to make a young Danny Ketch (Fergus Riordan) smile. In the comics, Ketch replaced Blaze as Marvel’s Ghost Rider throughout the 90s.
Ghost Rider has a thin bench of Hell-bound heavies Storrie could play. The first live-action go-to was Blackheart, the demon son of Mephisto (played by Peter Fonda in the 2007 film and Sacha Baron Cohen in Ironheart), who previously appeared in the fell form of Wes Bentley. Ghost Rider shares an enemy with Doctor Strange in Nightmare, the ruler of the Dream Dimension, and oh! Storrie could always play the pumpkin-headed Jack O’Lantern, though probably not. Of course, the most fun option for the actor, given that he would have a spiked mohawk and a flaming skull head of his own, is playing the ridiculous anti-hero Vengeance, though we’re not holding our breath about ever seeing Vengeance outside of pretty cool-looking covers any time soon. Whichever role Storrie ends up taking, odds are the smoldering glances he’ll exchange with Gosling’s Ghost Rider will be a bit more intense than he’s used to, given Ghost Rider’s wicked Penance Stare and all.
