Crazy Ex-Girlfriend to take its final bow with concert special set to air after its finale
The CW just renewed pretty much all of its shows, but some, like The A.V. Club favorite Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, won’t be returning. Fret not, however, as the show thrived during its four-season run and even scored an 18-episode order for its final run. Rachel Bloom’s musical comedy ends on Friday, April 5, but will enjoy an extended curtain call with a live concert special set to air immediately after its final episode.
Called Yes, It’s Really Us Singing: The Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Concert Special!, the event will find Bloom and the rest of the cast—Vincent Rodriguez III, Donna Lynne Champlin, Vella Lovell, Scott Michael Foster, and Gabrielle Ruiz, among others—performing a handful of the 150 original songs populating the show’s songbook. Choreography, multimedia, and a live orchestra will accompany the performances.
“The songwriters of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Rachel Bloom, Jack Dolgen and Adam Schlesinger, have written more than 150 outstanding songs in our four seasons,” co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna says in a press release. “It is an unprecedented contribution to the American songbook. I’m so thrilled we can share those songs with the world in a spontaneous format that really showcases their humor and genius.”
Brosh McKenna reflected on the show’s end in a recent interview with The A.V. Club. “Three or four episodes in, when it was clear our ratings were horrible, I said, ‘Look, I don’t know that we’ll ever make a show that has very high ratings, but I think we have a shot to make one of those shows that’s remembered in the long run of TV history as something that was special and good.’”
And, if there’s one song that we know will headline the special, it’s the one she told us refuses to leave her head: “The First Penis I Saw.” “It’s so catchy,” she told us. “If we’re talking about the music, on my own, I’ve found that’s the one I’m going to cue up first.”
