According to Screen Crush, Danny Boyle’s long-awaited Trainspotting sequel finally began shooting on May 16, with a release date of January 27, 2017. Also, the film now has an official title: T2.
Before anyone posits that the baby on the ceiling was actually a miniature cyborg, Boyle already addressed the comparison between the title and that of James Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day (dubbed T2 by pretty much everyone) several months ago. At that time, Boyle mentioned wanting to call the film T2 and stated that he might have to ask Cameron for permission. Apparently, the Emperor of the Sea surfaced from Avatar production long enough to give Boyle the go-ahead, mostly likely while gesturing to entirely CG surroundings and saying, “Take it. I’ve got bigger things happening now, guys.”
Of course, Boyle’s T2 is based on a book called Porno, Irvine Welsh’s follow-up to his own novel Trainspotting. However, Boyle has mentioned previously how Porno is “not a great book in the way that Trainspotting, the original novel, is genuinely a masterpiece” and that the script will only be a “loose adaptation” of the former (though presumably not so loose that it features robots made of liquid metal that divide and re-merge). T2 will star the original cast and was adapted by John Hodges, who wrote the original film.
