Matthew Lillard has joined the cast of Daredevil: Born Again for its second season, before the first season has even premiered. The resurrected street hero is set to return to the small screen on March 4. But Disney+ is already looking to the future of this Marvel property. Much like the last go-around on Netflix, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher joined the series and promptly got his own spin-off. Now, Lillard is being brought on for the show’s already-ordered season two, according to Deadline.
Lillard is a franchise veteran, having played the role of Shaggy in the live-action Scooby-Doo movies in the early 2000s and then voicing the character in animation for decades afterwards. Rather than getting stuck as Shaggy, he’s had an enviably varied career, appearing in everything from Twin Peaks: The Return to Five Nights At Freddy’s and the upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Life Of Chuck. He will also somehow return to the Scream franchise in the next installment, despite his character being dead. Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe is really just another feather in this guy’s cap.
As is typical of Marvel’s secrecy around spoilers, there are no details yet available as to what character Matthew Lillard will be playing. (A villain? An ally? Who knows!) However, Charlie Cox recently teased what’s to come in the second season. “I’ve read six of eight, and honestly—and I don’t normally say this kind of thing; I always err on the side of caution—that’s some of my favorite stuff I’ve read of Daredevil,” he told Collider. “We’ve got Dario Scardapane, who was brought in to pivot the show back at the beginning of 2024, who ended up writing the pilot and the last two episodes of this season that’s coming out. What he’s done so far with this new season is so cool and so different and so sinister, and I’m really, really excited about it.”
