It's Halloween and the SNL Trump-David S. Pumpkins convergence is nigh

It had to happen sometime. Last night’s Inde Navarrette-hosted Saturday Night Live saw a young couple boarding a suspiciously familiar haunted house ride setup in the cold open—only for Tom Hanks’ David S. Pumpkins to make his first appearance since 2022. With his trusty skeleton pals (Mikey Day and a visiting Bobby Moynihan) backing up his never-gonna-get-tiresome schtick, it seemed like SNL was going to kick off its rare Halloween-on-actual-Halloween episode with some good old nostalgia-bait, no matter that the joke ran dry after the first outing. (And don’t get us started on the animated Halloween special, which exists.)

But what’s that? A new, fresh comic force is arriving to liven things up with some—oh, nope, it’s Donald Trump. On the eve of the most consequential midterm elections of most of our lifetimes, James Austin Johnson’s Trump did his occasional freezing time schtick to take over the cold open. Mocking the idea that Oscar-winner Hanks was forced to stand stock-still for as long as he chose to ramble (and that the show flew Moynihan in, presumably from the Reggie Dinkins set), JAJ’s Trump did his thing. Announcing himself as “your one true God,” Trump yet made comparisons between him and Mr. Pumpkins, noting that they’re both “loud, orange, and annoying” while conceding that their whole thing felt a lot fresher in 2016.

This being Saturday Night Live, Johnson’s Trump didn’t delve into much of substance (like, say, the GOP trying to subvert democratic elections or Trump’s latest rape accuser), instead focusing on Trump’s recent obsession with taut, muscular Republican male asses. (He further conceded that Texas Democrat James Talarico has a much better butt than scandal-plagued Ken Paxton.) After realizing that his time stop powers don’t work on especially long-tenured cast veterans, Trump introduced both MAGA musical supporter Nicki Minaj (Saidah Belo-Osagie) and fired-in-seconds press secretary Katie Zacharia (Veronika Slowikoska) before allowing our cursed timeline to resume, hopefully on its way to electorally fixing some of the real Donald Trump’s hateful nonsense.
