Dawn Robinson of En Vogue says she’s been living in car for three years

The singer does say she would prefer to live in an apartment, but has enjoyed the overall experience.

Dawn Robinson, best known for her work with vocal group En Vogue, is sharing that she has been living in her car for the past “almost three years” and that it was her decision to do so. “This is not like, Oh my God, poor Dawn, she’s living in her car, it’s terrible, woe is me,” the singer explains in a YouTube video post on Tuesday. “I’m learning about who I am.”

In the video, Robinson says that she had been living with her parents in Las Vegas in 2020 before her relationship with her mom took a negative turn. She says that her former manager convinced her to come stay with him in Los Angeles, only to find out that he didn’t have room for her when she got there. This turned into eight months living in a hotel while she looked for an apartment.

“I told my assistant one day, I have been researching car life, this whole community of people that live in their cars,” she says in the video. “I loved what I was seeing! I just thought, wow… I can do this!” 

“March 9, 2022 is when I left the hotel,” she shares. “That first night was scary, but then as I got to know what to do in my car and how to do it, like how to cover my windows… I felt free… I didn’t regret it.” 

This is all pretty nice. Then around the 13-minute mark, Robinson makes reference to the “plandemic” and suggests more people began living off-grid after the COVID-19 lockdowns before moving on. Regardless, the singer expresses that she hopes to revive her singing career and to sell a documentary about her current experience in the car. You can check out the whole video below.

En Vogue formed in Oakland in 1989 and achieved major hits in the 1990s like “Whatta Man” and “Free Your Mind.” Robinson left the group in 2011 after a recording dispute, per Variety. She briefly reunited with her bandmates in 2019.
