Destroy, She Said discussion begins Monday; final poll on June’s reader pick begins now
Reminder: Next Monday, the 24th, we'll start discussing Marguerite Duras’ brief, poetic novel Destroy, She Said, the first pick from new WUIB books participant Emily Withrow. If you aren’t caught up, there’s still time, we swear: The actual book is only about 80 pages long, not counting the supplemental interviews and features that some of our editions have. Duras is the Oscar-nominated screenwriter behind Alain Resnais’ Hiroshima Mon Amour and writer of award-winning novel L’Amant, which Jean-Jacques Annaud adapted as the controversial 1992 British film The Lover.
Also, we finally bashed all those hundreds of reader suggestions into some kind of shape. We looked at the top 20 most-suggested books, and after eliminating a few for sheer length or complexity, winnowing out a couple that some of us have read and didn’t enjoy or didn’t think would make for good discussions, and then selecting the remaining handful that we’re most curious to try, we’ve narrowed it down to eight possibilities.
Most of us have not read any of these books—though we’ve heard enough about them, or read enough of the authors’ other work to be excited—so we’re putting the final selection entirely in your hands. Click on this link to go vote for your choice for June’s book pick. You have until 5 p.m. CST on Monday the 24th to vote; as we start discussing our May pick, we’ll announce the June pick so you (and we) can get started.
