That pesky serial killer just won’t stay dead! We knew it was coming, but today, we got our first glimpse at Michael C. Hall wearing that smug Dexter smile all over again for upcoming sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection. In a new teaser from Showtime, the briefly-deceased murderer reads a newspaper proclaiming “Dexter Morgan Is Dead” before revealing that he’s very much not.
If the show’s title wasn’t hint enough, Showtime confirmed that Dexter was indeed alive in a flash-forward during the first few minutes of recent prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin. The last time fans had seen Hall’s character, he was bleeding out in the snow after being shot by his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott), in the conclusion of 2021 limited series, Dexter: New Blood. That was before the premiere of Original Sin did some ret-con and revealed that he’d actually been resuscitated in a hospital. “I’ve experienced death so many times, but never my own,” the character says in a voiceover. “It really is like they say: Your life flashes before your eyes.”
We’ll see what Dexter does with this second chance when Dexter: Resurrection debuts its first two episodes on Paramount+ with Showtime on Friday, July 11, as the network announced today, per The Hollywood Reporter. The show will have its on-air debut that Sunday, July 13, with new episodes following weekly.
It does seem like he may at least attempt to turn over a new leaf. Here’s the series’ logline, per THR: “Weeks after Dexter Morgan (Hall) takes a bullet to the chest from his own son, he awakens from a coma to find Harrison (Alcott) gone without a trace. Realizing the weight of what he put his son through, Dexter sets out for New York City, determined to find him and make things right. But closure won’t come easy. When Miami Metro’s Angel Batista (David Zayas) arrives with questions, Dexter realizes his past is catching up to him fast. As father and son navigate their own darkness in the city that never sleeps, they soon find themselves deeper than they ever imagined — and that the only way out is together.”
Dexter: Resurrection is adding some new blood to the Dexter-verse. In addition to Hall, Alcott and Zayas, the series also stars Uma Thurman and Peter Dinklage. Neil Patrick Harris, Krysten Ritter, Eric Stonestreet and David Dastmalchian will also appear. If any of them end up as his victims, at least people don’t seem to stay dead in this franchise for too long.
