Tom Cruise is an eco-criminal in full-length Digger trailer

The latest trailer for Digger from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu puts the audience in an interesting position. It’s very clear that the titular Digger, played by Tom Cruise, is responsible for at least one major ecological disaster that, rightfully, makes him the subject of widespread scorn. But it also appears like he might be one of the only people in the world who can fix this problem and save the world from future issues like it, largely due to his wealth, fame, and connections, forcing us to root for his success, at least a little bit. We’re reminded of the quote from former New York Mayor Eric Adams, who told a crowd of people at a town hall, “I am the pilot, folks, and you are all passengers. Stop praying for me to crash the plane. Pray for me to land the plane because there’s no parachutes on this plane. We’re all going down together.”

Fortunately, Digger is a work of fiction, and for better or for worse, the future of our world is not up to the star of Jerry Maguire in a face full of prosthetics. It seems like Digger might actually be up to the task, if he can stop squabbling with everyone long enough to get anything done. Remember, this is a work of fiction.

Digger also stars Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons, and opens in theaters on October 2.
