Doechii wants fans to know her vocals will never give catfish. After delivering an emotional speech for her Best Rap Album win at this year’s Grammy Awards, the Florida-based artist took a victory lap with a standout performance of “Catfish” and “Denial Is A River.” (Literally—there was a treadmill involved.) Apparently, some people thought it was too good to be true. The rapper took to TikTok this weekend to respond to a comment implying that “some parts of the live song you can see that she’s not saying anything and the song is still playing with her pre-recorded voice,” a suggestion which caused her to literally yell in frustration.

“I can’t possibly get on here and say this calmly or nicely: y’all are stupid as hell. So slow!” she said—or “screamed” may be more accurate. “That is my DJ’s voice picking up on the lines that I can’t say because I’m doing a somersault. That entire performance was live.”

Not only did Doechii have to flip, strut, and “perform my ass off in a straddle on top of human men”; she was also “sick as a dog with bronchitis and the flu.” She concluded: “I worked my ass off to build the stamina for that, for y’all to play in my face. I don’t lip-sync. Don’t ever fucking play with me like that. Ever!”

It’s partly this infectious confidence that won Doechii the Best Rap Album Grammy for her 2024 project, Alligator Bites Never Heal. “This category was introduced in 1989 and two women have won,” said during her speech, before realizing that she made a mistake. “Three women have won: Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and Doechii.”
