Dolly Parton creates fund for families affected by Tennessee wildfires

Devastating wildfires in Tennessee this week killed at least seven people and destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses in the Great Smoky Mountains region. Now Dolly Parton—who grew up in the area and operates her popular Dollywood amusement park there—has pledged to help the fire’s victims. In a video posted on The Dollywood Foundation website, Parton announced the creation of a fund that will provide $1,000 a month to families who lost their homes in the fire. According to the website, that aid will be provided for six months to ensure the families can “get back on their feet.”

After beginning the video with a friendly, “Hi this is Dolly,” Parton goes on to explain that she believes “charity begins at home.” She notes, “I know it’s been a trying time for my people and this assistance will help.” The “My People Fund” program officially begins on Friday, at which point more information will be posted. The Dollywood Foundation is currently accepting donations on its website. The Red Cross, who Parton praises in her video for their work in Tennessee, is also accepting donations for disaster relief on a national level.
