Even Donald Trump thinks livestreaming an execution is a bridge too far

"[M]any very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device," says the President in a moment of uncharacteristic lucidity.

Even Donald Trump thinks livestreaming an execution is a bridge too far

Listen, with Donald Trump, you do not, under any circumstances, gotta hand it to him. But as a discussion emerged over the past week about whether an execution by firing squad could be livestreamed (and perhaps even broadcast on regular TV), it’s somewhat telling that even the guy known for saying or doing the cruelest thing possible at any given juncture thinks that the idea is a bridge too far. In a missive on Truth Social this morning, the President weighed in on the scheduled execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, who is responsible for the deaths of 13 people during a mass shooting at Fort Hood in 2009, and apparently confirmed that it won’t be moving forward.

Of course, the post starts with his normal throat-clearing about how this was all actually President Obama’s fault. But, “With all of that being said, I think streaming the execution for all to see might have been a strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with Terrorists and SCUM like Hasan but, many very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device,” Trump posts. “He will die, as scheduled, by firing squad, but this event will not be streamed. That said, the execution may be viewed in person by the immediate families of the victims, if they so choose. They deserve to witness JUSTICE!” Altogether, there is far too much bloodlust on display here for us to call this a moment of empathy, but at least we can use social media this week without the threat of being confronted with this particular government-produced snuff film.
