DVD/BD Release List – 07/13/10
This week we turn our focus to two movies that stumbled at the box office during their theatrical release, but which deserve a far better fate on DVD and Blu-ray. The Atom Egoyan-directed Chloe (based on Anne Fontaine’s French thriller Nathalie) baffled a lot of critics with its overheated Hitchcockian moves, all way outside the comfort zone of the usually chilly Egoyan. But on its own merits, Chloe is good, trashy fun, telling the story of one uptight woman’s descent into the tawdry, with crazy twists galore and strong performances by Julianne Moore as the woman and Amanda Seyfried as the prostitute who complicates her life. As for Noah Baumbach’s Greenberg, it received about the reception one would expect for a brittle comedy about the relationship troubles of a self-absorbed jerk. It’s not a movie with broad appeal, by any means. But Baumbach fans who missed it on first-run should appreciate how accurately and humorously he (along with star Ben Stiller) capture the small interactions and petty annoyances that make up a life.
