DVD/BD Release List – 10/19/10
Let’s kick off the list this week with a couple of 2010’s most enjoyable films, both of which debuted at Sundance earlier this year: Nicole Holofcener’s low-key New York comedy Please Give, with Catherine Keener as a well-off woman wracked with guilt over her privilege; and Leon Gast’s documentary Smash His Camera, about legendary paparazzo Ron Galella. The latter—which focuses mainly on Galella’s scraps with Marlon Brando, Elizabeth Taylor, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis—sets the scene for a few of our other noteworthy releases this week, which are all ‘70s-tastic. Debuting on Blu-ray we have Francis Ford Coppola’s phantasmagorical 1979 Vietnam epic Apocalypse Now, and the 1975 cult musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show. And from the distant recesses of ‘70s television, we have the fondly remembered 1974 Afterschool Special Free To Be… You And Me and the first season of the action-adventure The Bionic Woman. Yes, we can rebuild your childhood. We have the technology.
