Fast And Furious to become even more cartoonish with animated Netflix series

The Fast And Furious movies have embraced their sillier notions and became crazier and crazier with each installment, but Universal has now found a way to open the door to an infinitely crazier Fast And Furious universe with a new animated series for Netflix. Unfortunately, DreamWorks Animation seems to be taking the least interesting route it possibly can, with a Deadline story explaining that the cartoon will follow Tony Toretto, the previously unmentioned teenage cousin of Vin Diesel’s character in the movies, as he and his friends are recruited by the government to “infiltrate an elite racing league serving as a front for a nefarious crime organization.”

It’s not that it sounds like a bad idea, it’s just that it seems like a wasted opportunity to make a Fast And Furious cartoon and not make it about Dom and the rest of the Fast family stealing rocket ships and competing in space races while blowing away aliens with high-tech lasers. This sounds like what a Fast And Furious cartoon would look like on Saturday mornings in the ‘90s, when Universal and DreamWorks Animation should’ve been making Star Wars with drifting and Ludacris.

Oh well, the movie series will definitely get there eventually.
