U.K. singer FKA Twigs will soon return with her sophomore LP, a follow-up to LP1, one of our favorite albums of 2014. Details about the album remain scarce, but the genre-defying artist has shared a new single, “Cellophane,” which arrives with a stunning, athletic video for which Twigs aggressively trained.
“When I wrote “Cellophane” over a year ago a visual narrative came to me immediately,” she says in a statement. “I knew I had to learn how to pole-dance to bring it to life, and so that’s what I did.”
Yes. She did. Twigs, a longtime dancer, flexes some artful physicality in Andrew Thomas Huang’s sumptuous clip, which begins with the pole but transforms into a billowing, creature-filled journey into golden skies and red depths. Like the video, the song is all about texture, with round, rippling beats underscoring sharp, shadowy loops and Twigs’ crystalline vocals.
