George Lucas to team up with Daily Show writer and others for Star Wars sitcom
Lucasfilm has confirmed that an animated Star Wars sitcom is in the works, with somewhat of a smorgasbord of TV comedy talents behind it. According to a Lucasfilm statement quoted in Variety, the animated series will “look at the saga’s characters with a playful and irreverent tone.” Although a start date and network have yet to be established, the show has secured much of its creative force.
Brendan Hay from The Daily Show will serve as head writer, while Todd Grimes (Back At The Barnyard) is set to direct. As for the comedic tone and feel of the show, executive producer Jennifer Hill said that they are tapping Seth Green and Matthew Senreich as creative consultants to help shape the humor and look of the show. Robot Chicken enthusiasts can rejoice.
Others who are more dubious? Join the crowd. Although the Star Wars franchise has enjoyed ratings success with its animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Lucasfilm’s recent attempts at humor have had mixed, if questionable, results. Here’s to hoping Jar-Jar Binks is not one of the secondary characters they plan on reviving in the series.
