Class conflict is (mostly) frothy and delicious in first The Gilded Age season 4 teaser

The historical drama series returns to HBO in November.

Class conflict is (mostly) frothy and delicious in first The Gilded Age season 4 teaser

If our current Gilded Age is any indication, living through the first Gilded Age was probably not much fun for most people. But watching a historical reenactment of it from a safe distance where many of the conflicts are just dinner party plans between passive-aggressive enemies? Why, that’s exactly what The Gilded Age is for. Of course, there are more intense stories to be found in this series—Peggy’s (Denée Benton) storylines have been heavy since basically day one, and someone tried to freaking assassinate George Russell (Morgan Spector) last season—but the first teaser for the new season promises plenty of frothy fun. For example, who wouldn’t want to watch the social-climbing, former maid Mrs. Enid Winterton (Kelley Curran) enter into a lavender relationship with Oscar van Rhijn (Blake Ritson) to achieve more social climbing? This alone is a great reason to tune into HBO on a Sunday evening. 

When we last left The Gilded Age, Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) had achieved everything she had ever wanted, and all it cost was everything she truly held dear. Her marriage was essentially kaput, and her daughter (Taissa Farmiga) was resentfully married off across the Atlantic. Meanwhile, across the street, the van Rhijn sisters were dealing with a status change of their own as Ada (Cynthia Nixon) had suddenly taken the reins of the family’s finances from Agnes (Christine Baranski). This, of course, is the kind of conflict to handle over lavish dinner parties. 

All this and more when The Gilded Age returns on November 1 at 9 p.m.
