Glen Powell thinks all the Paramount layoffs bear some responsibility for Running Man flop

Glen Powell has become one of the biggest actors of the 2020s, and it has come with plenty of hard times and exhaustion. This is a takeaway from a new profile on the actor in Esquire, which, like plenty of other features, highlights Powell’s work ethic and the countless hours he put into his career, from bit roles in the 2000s to the lead roles of more recent years. As such, it can’t help but sound like Powell feels a little let down by Paramount when it came time to promote The Running Man, an Edgar Wright-directed action flick that only grossed $69 million globally against a $110 million budget. “They let go of an entire marketing department a month before our movie came out in the middle of a merger,” Powell reflects to Esquire, remarking that the film left him “broken, physically and emotionally.”

As for the “broken, physically” part, Powell apparently nearly lost a hand while filming The Running Man. There is a scene where Powell’s character is stabbed in the hand, which was completed using a prop knife with a retractable blade—meaning that Powell still had a prop smashing into his hand multiple times. Unbeknownst to him, Powell ruptured a tendon in his hand but kept filming because he didn’t want to delay production. Eventually, in a Bulgarian emergency room, he learned that he had a septic infection which required immediate surgery. As he was being put under, he recalls attendings telling him, “You could wake up without a hand.” The film ended up writing hand bandages into the script and he filmed the next day. So, yeah, it’s easy to see how this whole experience led him to a low place.
