Game creator David Jaffe calls God Of War first look "so bad in so many ways"

The first look of the Prime Video series makes it look like Kratos is "shitting in the woods."

Game creator David Jaffe calls God Of War first look

It can often be difficult to watch your work be adapted by a major corporation for a new medium. George R.R. Martin has made this very clear over the last few years. Now, God Of War game creator David Jaffe is watching his creation get an adaptation from Prime Video. Last week, the streamer shared a first look of the series, which depicts Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus. Jaffe then released a video sharing his reaction to the image. In short, he didn’t like it very much.

“I swear I’m not doing a bit. I don’t do bits. I’m sure everybody’s trying real hard… it’s so dumb,” Jaffe says near the start of his video. “But let’s be incredibly clear, okay? Two things can be true. This can be a terrible image, and it is. It’s so bad in so many ways, which we’ll talk about in a moment. And Ron Moore is awesome, who is the showrunner. He created the new Battlestar [Galactica],… This guy is a juggernaut of a talented fellow. I have absolutely no doubt it is going to be a good show…. I’m not worried about the show, but I’m a little worried about what the fuck is this?”

He doesn’t mind that the Kratos character might look different than it does in the game. “I’d much rather have a great actor who embodies the essence of a character and makes the character endearing or memorable or iconic than looks just like the person in the video game,” Jaffe continues. “It’s just a dumb fucking image.” He goes on, “The most offensive thing about the image is not Kratos. Kratos in this pose, with this face—expression, not the guy’s face, but this expression—he just looks stupid. If you’re going to reveal, to most people, a brand new character that you hope is going to carry your series, for the first time, and they’ve never really seen this before, and this is the way you introduce them?” Jaffe speculates that maybe Prime Video consciously selected the image to focus on the father-son story instead of the “Spartan rage” elements of the story. However, “then, at that point, could you find a picture that doesn’t look like he’s shitting in the woods? Cause that’s what the picture looks like. But that’s not the most offensive thing.”

Jaffe says he doesn’t mind aging the character of Atreus being aged down for the needs of the show either, but “his hair looks like it’s got tons of product in it… the way the whole image looks, he looks like he’s kind of… very confused little boy with way too much product in his hair. Neither of these characters look very interesting or appealing. They look, just, dumb.” The full video of Jaffe’s comments are below.
