Godzilla 2 will feature familiar monster faces, and King Kong is getting some sort of spinoff
Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla reboot may have had plenty of giant things getting punched and/or smashed, but it was missing one long-standing tradition from the classic series: Godzilla’s gang of wacky monster friends. Thankfully, Edwards appeared in a pre-recorded message during Legendary’s Comic-Con panel to confirm that not only is he going to direct Godzilla 2, but he’s also bringing along Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah to the sequel. This comes via The Hollywood Reporter, which also said that Edwards joked that he’s “doing a small sci-fi movie” before going back to Godzilla. That should give us plenty of time to criticize the new Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah for being too fat. Even with more of his old pals joining him, though, there’s still no sign of Godzilla’s nephew Godzooky.
In other olde-timey monster news, Legendary also announced that it’s making a movie based on Skull Island, the home of Hollywood acting legend—and fearsome giant ape—King Kong. Variety reports that the film probably won’t be a sequel/prequel/reboot of Peter Jackson’s fifteen-hour-long monkey epic from 2005, but it “could feature” King Kong. Also, Skull Island is not to be confused with Monster Island, which is actually more of a peninsula.
