Great Job, Internet!: Hey, Sweeper, you gotta sweep these mines in "Triple-A Minesweeper"

An overly serious (complimentary) version of the classic PC game comes with the intensity of Metal Gear Solid.

Great Job, Internet!: Hey, Sweeper, you gotta sweep these mines in

Sweeper’s back, and this time he’s sweeping mines. “Triple-A Minesweeper,” a new and hilarious version of the classic PC puzzler, was unleashed on an unsuspecting Internet earlier today. To say Sweeper’s sweeping mines again would be an understatement. He’s got to sweep these mines. Hailing from Mike Lacher, the internet-based humorist behind “I’m Comic Sans, Asshole,” and “The Voter Suppression Trail,” “Triple-A Minesweeper” reimagines the Windows game with the overwrought intensity of a mega-budgeted action game.

Though one might think “Triple-A Minesweeper” implies actually animating a naval minesweeper clearing, say, the Strait of Hormuz of dangerous explosives, Lachner keeps things thankfully small-scale. Dialogue aside, it’s a shortened version of the Minesweeper you know and love, with added urgency around needing to sweep these mines. However, if you’re like this writer and never really understood how to logic your way out of Minesweeper and simply clicked around hoping you wouldn’t, shit, find a mine, the game has you covered and does a pretty good job doing what Windows never bothered to do: Teach you how to play. It’s a bit like having the dialogue from Metal Gear Solid play over a standard version of the same game that came on every Windows-based PC between Windows 3.11 and Windows 8, which is around the time using the computer started feeling like hell on earth.

We won’t spoil all the very good laughs in “Triple-A Minesweeper”—in fact, some of the best jokes happen before the game even begins. And we definitely don’t want to ruin the twist ending that ties up the long-simmering relationship between Sweeper and Nora. We’ll leave it to you to clear these mines, so get sweeping.
