Both Penn and John Cho have formally signed on to the sequel but are still awaiting the green light.

When we last saw Harold and Kumar, they were enjoying A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas some 15 years ago. Yet, despite the unstoppable march of time, our heroes are still finding roaches to spark. Last year, Lionsgate said it would smoke ’em if they got ’em, and today, speaking to Deadline, star Kal Penn confirms that he and co-star John Cho are “formally signed on for a fourth film” and the script is, indeed, funny. In fact, it’s “one of the funniest scripts” he’s read in a long time, which is saying something, considering he’s got a Gregg Araki comedy and an Anna Nicole Smith biopic on the horizon. Penn also confirms that returning screenwriters Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who, in the years since dropping the bong, created the Karate Kid legacy spin-off, Cobra Kai, will direct the new installment, a job they haven’t assumed since the boys escaped to Gitmo in 2008.
