Here are Ben And Jerry’s first two Saturday Night Live flavors
Last week it was announced that Ben And Jerry’s would be launching a series of flavors inspired by Saturday Night Live sketches—a union that made perfect sense, in that with both SNL sketches and Ben And Jerry’s, no one ever knows when to stop. Speculation ran rampant as to what classic characters and memorable moments from the show’s incredible 40-year history would be loosely translated into the ice-cream manufacturer’s two-dozen or so ingredients. As it turns out, instead they went with Gilly.
The sketch in which Kristen Wiig wears a wig and contorts her face—no, not that one—is the genesis of Gilly’s Catastrophic Crunch, which has a marshmallow swirl “as frantic and mischievous as the flavor’s namesake.” (Mmmm…. frantic.) Also like its namesake, it’s absolute overkill: That marshmallow swirl wends its impish, spastic way around both chocolate and sweet cream ice cream, and it also comes loaded with caramel clusters and fudge covered almonds. For the first few bites, it’s a guilty delight; after the 10th or 12th, you can’t take anymore.
The other flavor, “Lazy Sunday,” is vanilla cake batter ice cream mixed with yellow and chocolate cupcake pieces and a swirl of chocolate frosting. Like the Digital Short it’s based on, it’s even better consumed while high.
Two more SNL flavors are expected later this year. Given that they only seem to be looking at the last decade of the show, you can probably expect something like The Californians’ Rocky Road.
