Hulu’s offering up a double-punch of women refusing to be pushed around by the patriarchal, fascist societies into which they were born this month, with the streaming service’s May output opening up with the premiere of the excellent Ask Dr. Ruth—which recounts the celebrated sex therapist’s life, from childhood Holocaust survivor to Israeli-trained sniper to one of the planet’s fiercest advocates for sexual equality—and then follows it a few days later with the third-season premiere of The Handmaid’s Tale.
From the promo materials circulating for the Elisabeth Moss-fronted series, the watchword in this year’s sojourn to Gilead is “resistance”; June and her allies are fighting back against the tyrannical, misogynistic regime, and while it almost certainly won’t turn out well for everyone, it’s definitely a different flavor of defiance from the more passive and personal resistance she’s shown off in the past.
Meanwhile, if you like your anti-dystopian efforts in a more real-world-y, journalistic form, the service is also broadcasting the debut of The Weekly, which follows the reporters of the New York Times as they pursue individual stories, which promises to be suitably inspiring, at least if they stay the fuck away from the paper’s Opinions desk.
