The chocolate industry is getting its Blackberry. Today, Variety announced that Mean Girls and Freaky Friday director Mark Waters is currently developing a live-action Hershey movie focused on the company’s early days.

Finn Wittrock will play founder Milton Hershey and Alexandra Daddario will play his wife, Kitty, in the brand-approved company origin story. “Against all odds, Milton achieved great success, but unlike a lot of other wealthy men of his time, he shared his success with the working people and community around him,” Waters said in a statement. “The core of Hershey, the movie, will be the special love story between Milton and Catherine Hershey, who inspired his greatest legacy—the creation of Milton Hershey School. I’m excited to have Finn Wittrock and Alexandra Daddario to portray these two visionaries, who believed in leaving the world a better place than they found it—the kind of wonderful, true story that audiences are hungry for right now.”

It seems the original Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory will remain the only chocolate movie with a hard shell, at least for the time being. “Milton Hershey’s story exemplifies the American Dream,” Michele Buck, president and CEO of The Hershey Company, said in her own statement. Milton and Kitty’s “legacy extends beyond sweet treats to education, community and opportunity for thousands. We’re proud to support a film that shares the full Hershey story—one of resilience, vision and impact that continues to inspire today.”

It’s hard to imagine Hershey will actually tell the “full Hershey story,” which wouldn’t be quite as sweet. We’ll see sometime in 2026, when the film is slated for release. The project is currently seeking distribution.
